The operating system, the version, and Service pack.

In Windows 7 and 10:

Right-click Computer (in 7), or This PC (in 10)

A system window appears showing the OS and hardware details of your PC.

Protect Your PC with a Surge Protector

This is an area that is critical to the continued operation of your PC. Power surges and lightning strikes can sometimes get coupled onto your PC through the power or phone line.
These surges can damage your PC.

Surge protected power strips have snubber circuits that filter out these potentially dangerous power line transients.

In addition to AC line protection many surge protectors also have protected phone line connectors. Use these to protect your PC's modem:
Plug a standard telephone cable between the phone wall connector and the 'In' connector on the surge protector.
Use a second cable to connect your modem to the 'Out' connector.
Your modem and PC are now protected from dangerous line transients.

Surge protectors with these features cost around $20 dollars and are well worth every penny of it!

Save your work often

When you are creating or modifying a file make sure to save your work often.
Every time I add a line or two I save it. You'd be amazed at how much work can be produced in just a few minutes and potentially lost if not saved.

Here are a few ways to do this.
Most applications have a Save icon (looks like a floppy disk) on the toolbar near the top of screen.
Just click it and the latest changes are saved.
An alternate way is to hold down the 'Alt' key, press the 'F' key then the 'S' key.
In some applications there is an auto save feature that will automatically save your work on time intervals you can set.
You'll need to check the application help feature to find it but it is well worth the time invested.

Internet Protocol

Below is the lesson plan for an online Internet Protocol (IP) tutorial. Each lesson contains articles and other references that explain the basics of IP networking. We recommend completing these lessons in the order listed, but the concepts of IP networking be learned in other progressions as well. Those involved in home networking have different needs than someone working on a business network, for example.
Command Prompt - Ping - Responsive IP Address - Bradley Mitchell / About.com
Command Prompt - Ping - Responsive IP Address.Bradley Mitchell / About.com

1.  IP Address Notation

IP addresses have certain rules for how they are constructed and written. Learn to recognize what IP addresses look like andhow to find your IP address on different kinds of devices.

  • 2.  The IP Address Space
The numeric values of IP addresses fall into certain ranges. Some number ranges are restricted in how they can be used. Due to these restrictions, the process of IP address assignment becomes extremely important to get right. See the difference between private IP addresses and public IP addresses.
3.  Static and Dynamic IP Addressing
A device can get its IP address automatically from another device on the network, or it can sometimes be set up with its own fixed (hardcoded) number. Learn about DHCP and how to release and renew assigned IP addresses.
4.  IP Subnetting
Another restriction on how IP address ranges can be used comes from the concept ofsubnetting. You'll rarely find subnets of home networks, but they are a good way to keep large numbers of devices communicating efffciently. Learn what a subnet is and how to manage IP subnets.
5.  Network Naming and Internet Protocol
The Internet would be extremely difficult to use if sites all had to be browsed by their IP addresses. Discover how the Internet manages its huge collection of domains through aDomain Name System (DNS) and how some business networks use a related technology called Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS).
6.  Hardware Addresses and Internet Protocol
Besides its IP address, every device on an IP network also possesses a physical address (sometimes called a hardware address). These addresses are closely linked to one specific device, unlike IP addresses that can be reassigned to different devices on a network. This lesson covers Media Access Control and all about MAC addressing.
7.  TCP/IP and Related Protocols
Many other network protocols run on top of IP. Two of them are especially important. Besides Internet Protocol itself, this is a good time to get a solid understanding of TCPand its cousin UDP.

Routers

Routers are small electronic devices that join multiple computer networks together via either wired or wireless connections.

How Routers Work

In technical terms, a router is a Layer 3 network gateway device, meaning that it connects two or more networks and that the router operates at the network layer of the OSI model.
Routers contain a processor (CPU), several kinds of digital memory, and input-output (I/O) interfaces.
They function as special-purpose computers, one that does not require a keyboard or display.
The router's memory stores an embedded operating system (O/S). Compared to general-purpose OS products like Microsoft Windows or Apple Mac OS, router operating systems limit what kind of applications can be run on them and also need much smaller amounts of storage space.
Examples of popular router operating systems include Cisco Internetwork Operating System (IOS) and DD-WRT. These operating systems are manufactured into a binaryfirmware image and are commonly called router firmware.
By maintaining configuration information in a part of memory called the routing table, routers also can filter both incoming or outgoing traffic based on the addresses of senders and receivers.

Routers for Business Networks and the Internet

Before home networking became popular, routers could be found only the closets of businesses and schools. Each cost thousands of dollars and required special technical training to set up and manage.
The largest and most powerful network routers form the Internet backbone.
These routers must manage many terabits of data flowing through and between Internet Service Provider (ISP) networks

Home Broadband Routers

Routers became mainstream consumer devices when households began to accumulate multiple computers and wanted to share the home Internet connection
Home networks use Internet Protocol (IP) routers to connect computers to each other and to the Internet.
Home routers often cost USD $100 or less. They are manufactured to be much more affordable than business routers in part because they offer fewer features. Still, home routers provide many essential home networking functions:
  • sharing of home Internet connections for dozens of devices
  • basic home network firewall and other security support
  • ability to change router configuration settings from a Web browsers

Other Types of Routers and Routing Devices

A class of portable Wi-Fi routers called travel routers are marketed to people and families who want to use the functions of a personal router at other locations besides home.
Routing devices called mobile hotspots that share a mobile (cellular) Internet connection with Wi-Fi clients are also available. Many mobile hotspot devices only work with certain brands of cell service.
